In the Beginning: Wrap the end
of the yarn a few times around the neck of the nøsty in the indentations
to secure the end of the yarn. |
 |
 |
Wrapping the "Core": Hold the handle in your less coordinated hand.
Starting 1/3 of the way up the tapered section, from where you wrapped the
yarn, begin winding the yarn straight around, perpendicular to the nøsty
(direction of arrow). Lay the wraps next to one another, stopping after
you have about 1 to 2 inches of parallel wraps. This may vary depending on
the size of the ball you intend to wind. |
|
Build your nest: Now, bring the yarn diagonally down to the
beginning of the parallel wraps. Hold the nøsty at a 45º angle and wrap
diagonally from the lower left hand corner of your wraps to the upper
right hand corner of your wraps (direction of arrows). Then back down to
the lower left hand corner. You may need to hold the left corner down with
your left thumb and the right corner with your left finger to hold them in
place.
Continue wrapping, so that each strand lays down next to the one before,
while turning the nøsty toward you and wrapping away from you. The tension
should be firm but not tight. |
 |
|
Shaping the ball: If you place the corner of each diagonal wrap
right up against the side of the nøsty, beside the corner of the previous
layer, the height of your ball will increase as does its diameter. Your
ball will end up looking something like a round ball or football. |
 |
 |
|
If you want a ball with a flat top and bottom, then while you're winding
diagonally, you must visualize where the edge of the ball will be. Place
your first layer of corners at this point. For each additional layer,
place the corner on top of the layer below, not touching the nøsty, so the
ends of the ball forms straight out from the nøsty. |
 |
 |
|
When your ball is done, or you run out of yarn, unwind your starter knot
at the neck and slide the ball off the top. the ball should slide off
easily and intact. |
